Commercial Case Study: Wild Pesto

Photography Brief: A range of marketing imagery showcasing the pesto-making process, along with professional headshots and product branding.
It was a pleasure to photograph Tamsin in her home and work environments to promote her Wild Pesto business. Working from the outlined brief, I planned to capture the different aspects of Tamsin’s working day including picking wild garlic in some of her favoured locations, to preparing and making the pesto, as well as the final packaged product and some serving suggestions. We booked in one day of photography in which to capture each of the elements.
Tamsin was fantastic to work with, welcoming me into her home and workspace to photograph her preparing and making the pesto. Her kitchen had plenty of different lighting options and textured walls and surfaces that I could use to maximise the range of imagery. I took candid photographs of Tamsin as she worked, pausing for poses of the key stages of preparation. I then staged a variety of scenes for product placement of the jars of Wild Pesto with food serving suggestions that would engage audiences with the pesto.
For the outdoor photography, I worked with the adapting weather conditions to photograph Tamsin on location with crops of wild garlic. The day had intermittent showers and inconsistent lighting so we visited some different sites so that I could determine which landscapes offered the best photography conditions. I picked the areas that were more open to get nice backdrops of Tamsin with the best natural lighting. I took a range of headshots and profile images of Tamsin in portrait and landscape to maximise their versatility for marketing materials.
Keeping away from the more tightly wooded areas allowed lots of natural light into the photographs and some striking patches of sunlight that showcased the lush greenery of the plants. I brought jars of pesto with us so that I could photograph them with the wild garlic plants to showcase the lush, fresh produce that makes up the core ingredient of Wild Pesto. Using a foraging basket and a fallen branch as stages, I photographed the Wild Pesto range in a natural environment that reflected Tamsin’s business ethos.
