I Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer
Video Shoot

It was a real delight to work with Liza Pulman on her new music video, I Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer. Creating a visual journey to accompany Liza’s beautiful vocals, we put a plan together to shoot a story that connected the audience with Liza, the song and the location. With the main objectives and requirements highlighted, I thoroughly embraced the opportunity to get creative with a whole host of shots and capture the attention of both the listener and the viewer.

With Liza’s natural skills and silky voice, the material was already there to create something really memorable. That said, creating the right visuals to accompany the music was really important to add that extra dimension and convey the tone that Liza wanted. Ultimately, I chose a series of locations in and around Mylor near Falmouth in Cornwall and arranged a shoot for the summer of 2021. Keeping days flexible was naturally a key part of this, as the weather played a huge factor in permitting the shoot, setting the scene and adding the best natural lighting.

In true Cornish style, we were faced with a number of different weather and lighting conditions whilst shooting outside. Having already scouted out the area, it was great to have a choice of locations to achieve the best footage. The stunning landscapes created the perfect backdrop for the piece and set the scene perfectly for the dreamy yet heartfelt nature of the song. I also filmed a variety of close-up and distant shots of Liza, letting the landscapes set the stage and again reinforcing the sense of journey.

During the filming itself, I chose to use a Steadicam for many of the shots. Known for their stabilizing technology, Steadicams prevent camera shakes during filming and enable a balanced, steady shot, even when shooting while moving or when operating on uneven ground – which happened to be most of what we were doing! This helped to create a smooth sense of movement and fluidity and also enhance the sense of journey throughout the video. I coupled this with a range of other equipment to allow for an array of techniques and add to the visual interest.

Once filming was complete, I then went onto edit the video, which included colour-grading, sound overlaying, lip syncing and more. Individually, these are all hugely important elements that combine to bring together the final touches and refine the final product. With a combination of Liza’s creative energy and vision and my own skills and expertise, both the filming and editing processes were a real pleasure throughout and the results are something I’m very proud of.
