N Photo Magazine – Apprentice Feature

I’m happy to announce that I will be featured across a 10-page spread in this month’s upcoming issue of N Photo magazine. Having been approached by the N Photo team to take part, I relished the opportunity to get involved and share my experience and skills as a Nikon user. As part of the piece, I was assigned as professional lead to help teach an apprentice photographer, Nathan, some top tips and tricks for shooting interiors. A huge part of my commercial work, shooting interiors is something I have lots of experience of and I was all too happy to share some of the knowledge I’ve gleaned over the years.

The actual shoot itself was held at the Count House, a stunning Victorian House in Carbis Bay, St Ives, that was once owned by the world-famous potter, Bernard Leach. Full of history and character, the Count House was a great subject to capture through the lens and each room provided lots of inspiration. As I tend to use natural light over stage lighting, we timed our shoot with the morning sunshine and worked our way through the house to achieve optimum lighting for each room as the sun made its way around. This provided a really natural look and achieved a much warmer and more inviting feel to the shots.

As I have never taken on board an apprentice before, the experience very much opened my eyes as to how involved the process is for shooting interiors and how much has now become second-nature to me. It’s only when I began explaining processes to someone else that I truly appreciated how much goes into an interior shoot. Needless to say, Nathan was a great photographer to work with and really took everything on board. It was a really rewarding experience and it’s great to share insights into how certain styles and types of photography are executed and achieved with not only Nathan but the readers of N Photo too.

For the full lowdown on the Count House shoot and some of my best interior top tips and advice, grab yourself a copy of N Photo’s May 2022 edition, issue 136. Just some of my practical tips for capturing an interior’s true potential include the best gear and equipment to use, camera settings, technique assessment, dressing and design, lighting and more. I also talk about some of the most important post-shoot features too, including how to edit interiors and what to look out for in the editing process. If the Count House really captures your attention, you can also book yourself a stay.
